Week One

Loss (Prep)

 TO GET READY FOR CLASS.

READ THE POEM BELOW by James Baldwin

WRITE one paragraph ABOUT WHEN YOU HAVE KNOWN LOSS-

DO YOU IDENTIFY WITH BALDWIN’S PRAYER THAT IT MIGHT LIGHTEN UP A BIT?

There is a tight correlation between loving and losing. When you learn of the loss you go into instant dislocation. Sounds, the awareness of time, and the rhythms of coming and going change dramatically during grief. Write about one example of dislocation during a loss.

Lord,

              when you send the rain

              think about it, please,

              a little?

      Do

              not get carried away

by the sound of falling water,

              the marvelous light

              on the falling water.

          I

              am beneath that water.

              It falls with great force

              and the light

Blinds

              me to the light.

“For a person in love, the air looks no different for a person in grief.”

Schubert at the Piano, 1945 by Gustav Klimt

WHEN I WISHED TO SING OF LOVE,
IT TURNED TO SORROW.
AND WHEN I WISHED TO SING OF SORROW, IT WAS TRANSFORMED
FOR ME INTO LOVE.
